Now you can keep your stock in perfect condition by using this kit at the beginning or end of each season or to enhance a dull finish at any time.

Instructions for use:

Before starting work, carefully examine your gunstock for damage or cracks which may cause problems later. If in doubt, contact your local gunmaker or write to Frank Whyman at Napier.

  1. Prepare the stock by removing old varnish or oiled finish completely. Heavy varnish may be removed with one of the commercially available strippers. Once you have removed the old finish, examine the gun for dents and bruises, small indentations can be removed by the application of boiling water applied on a small pad, hold in position and repeat until the grain swells sufficiently to remove the blemish.
  2. Once the stock is free of blemishes it should be lightly sanded with the fine grade paper supplied (dry).
  3. If you have a particularly light coloured stock and wish to change its appearance, you may at this stage apply any commercially available water or spirit based wood stain. However, remember that the stock finish contains colourants to enhance the appearance of your stock and will naturally deepen the colour to a rich sheen as applied. If in doubt test on a small area before proceeding.
  4. If working on a stripped or new stock apply a generous coating of grain filler and leave to harden overnight.
  5. Remove the hard residue with the fine wire wool, lubricated with a very small amount of the light rubbing oil.
  6. Apply first coat of London Gunstock Finish with one of the applicators supplied. The first application will be absorbed quite quickly. Repeat with subsequent coats avoiding over applying and allowing 1-2 hours to harden between coats. Always remove any excess with the fine grade wire wool, if necessary lubricated with a small amount of rubbing oil.
  7. Continue to build up a professional finish with further coats according to your requirements. Finally polish with the finishing cloth and rubbing oil.
  8. Occasional applications of finish will remove blemishes and keep your gunstock in perfect condition.
  9. These instructions relate to the use of the London Gun Stock Finish Kit as supplied with Abrasives, Sealer, Rubbing Oil, Applicators and one 100ml bottle of Stock Finish. Kit Code 4760. All the above items are available from Napier to replenish the kit when required. Generally there is sufficient material in each kit to refinish up to five guns.
